ByteDance Campus

The New ByteDance Campus is a competition proposal for an integrated urban technology campus in Shenzhen’s Houhai District. Building on ByteDance’s existing Houhai Center, the scheme introduces three new towers totaling approximately 128,000 m² and transforms a set of separate parcels into one connected headquarters environment.

The design shifts the model of the corporate campus from isolated office buildings to a layered urban ecosystem. A network of planted ground-level spaces, elevated walkways, internal bridges, and below-grade connections links the existing building with the new towers, creating continuous routes between workplaces, shared amenities, dining, fitness, retail, and social spaces. The campus is conceived as both a secure workplace and an active urban interface, allowing public life at its perimeter while organizing collaboration and community at its center.

The architectural strategy is based on a flexible 9 × 9 m structural grid, allowing office floors, collaborative hubs, meeting spaces, and support areas to adapt as teams and working patterns evolve. Generous floor-to-floor heights, column-free zones, vertical social connections, and landscaped terraces support daylight, visual openness, informal exchange, and a range of individual and collective work settings.

Responding to Shenzhen’s dense coastal context, the project extends the city’s blue-green network through the site. Terraced landscapes, planted roofs, vertical greenery, climate-responsive façades, shading, rainwater collection, and high-efficiency environmental systems work together to improve comfort and reduce operational demand. Smart building controls and AI-informed environmental monitoring are proposed to optimize daylight, thermal comfort, energy use, and space utilization over time.

Together, the existing center and three new towers form a resilient, adaptable, and human-centered technology campus: one that connects architecture, landscape, infrastructure, and workplace culture into a unified urban whole.
